I was out fishing with someone last month that had a fairly new looking Calais. I tried it for several cast......it cast about the same as my 6 year old 200BSF curado but not nearly as smooth reeling as my reel.

Mr. Gerald, I will outcast your "200BSF". Shimano says that their absolute best reel for saltwater applications is a Chronarch 100D. That is, if you are wading. From a boat, Calais is the best application. Now, at these prices, I understand that they are not for everyone and I am not trying to sell 'em. I'm just letting W know that a Curado, while it is a great buy in a reel, it is nowhere near the best. Totally different guts in these reels.

I was wondering how long it would take.

So, boys and girls we have annudder challenged issue.

Step right up to the counter and place your bets.

I think this one will need more choices than win or loose, so be sure to give us some input for other preferred choices.

1. Salty wins.
2. W to Win
3. Salty t0_________________
4. W to ____________________
5. Salty to _______________

I honestly believe the calcutta TE is a better reel, maybe not for trout fishing b/c of the weight, but for saltwater fishing in general.

I have to disagree about the Citica being trash in saltwater...We have both Citica's and Curado's and they both hold up well in the salt...Have been fishing them in Big Lake for over 5 years now and they have both been swimming and still going strong with proper cleaning and maintenance...

BLB....Too me a good reel is one with no maintenance....I never clean my reels....I dropped one in today taking a trout off....I just let them ride....If you have to clean a reel then its not worth using in my book!!! Add a little oil every now and then and that's it.....I have some old green Curados that have never been worked on and still cast like new......I had to have some gears in the 100D's changed out before due to wear but nothing major...A good reel should be able to handle abuse ,abuse , and more abuse

I don't think there is such a thing as a reel that requires absolutely no maintenance...If you do no maintenance at all, it will only last you a few years, then you have to replace it...We oil and lube ours at least once a year(sometimes more if someone decides to go swimming) to ensure maximum performance and a long life on the reel...Some people don't like to mess with their reels; good for them...we just prefer to take extra care to ensure the best fishing we can...

I'll just bet that your reels have never had any problems with the drag......

w...like BLB said we have citicas and curados in our arsenal. The Citicas are awesome, but you are right they are not better than the curados. I love my curados, but if you have taken apart and cleaned as many as i have and looked inside, just not on the surface, they all are subject to corrosion from abuse in saltwater. All of the low profile shimanos have the same style drive gear that is made of brass and prolonged use in saltwater they will show signs of corrsion, especially if never cleaned. I do have a citica that has been completely submurged three times now, and by properly tearing it down and cleaning it still works like new....

I use to clean them years ago but I just don't find that I need too...... Just add some Shimano oil and let ER Rip!!!!..... I would hate to see what the inside of my reels really look like!!!!! They might get a cleaning Next year!!(Maybe)
