Both Shimano and Daiwa make good spinning reels in that price range.
I got some Penn Battles they are not best built reels and the only reason why I bought them was the drag and I got two for $100. Not a reel I would put in the surf and expect to last. Basically a boat reel. Gears are Pot metal and not as strong as Daiwa or Shimano in same price range. Rods I go with temple fork due to I can get two for $99 shipped to my door. Not best rod, but not bad rod either. I like the warranty if I break them. |

I fished my shimano Stradic in surf two times. First time sprayed it down and left it for 1 month and picked it up before we left second time and it was dragging and hanging. Opened port wd-40 it and easy like jay cutler on his back. After second trip did it again and boom jay cutler on his back again. VERY EASY TO DO

I love my Stradics. That being said I paid 79$ for a Sahara for my wife and I use it surf fishing and its been swimming a bunch and its still smooth and quite. For the price 80$ it can't be beat. 200$ for a Stradic but the Stradics are sealed better and the drag is smooth as silk.
