What would a 40" Bull Redfish weigh?
Caught several 40" Reds. Put the tape to them, but my battery was out in my 50# Rapala scales. So, what would a fat and happy 40' female weigh? Thanks! |

This one was like 42" and it weighed 38 lbs. I weighed it on a certified scale at a crawfish wholesale so I believe it. I thought it would have been heavier. I was going to mount it but couldn't find a reasonably priced taxidermist. I caught this thing with half a spool of 15# Big Game on a Curado 50. It took me 30 min to get it in the boat. I was in a little boat and it pulled me all over the flat otherwise it would have spooled me pretty quick. Its still to this day the prettiest redfish I have ever seen. Wish I had a better picture.

Really depends on how thick the fish is. I target them a lot, and I've have ones in the 40 inch range go anywhere from 30lbs to 42lbs. That said, I find that the ones on the western half of the state tend to not be as thick and heavy as the ones on the east half of the state. Cocodrie and Venice produce very thick reds, whereas Vbay and Cameron Parish tend to have leaner reds.

I had one at 38" and it weighed 28 lbs if I had to judge by average I would say 1lb per inch then subtract 10 lbs and you gonna be pretty damn close to spot on |

The typical weight of a 40" redfish in LA waters should be about 26 lbs.
We've weighed and measured a lot of bull reds, and it is not uncommon to encounter fish 20% higher or lower than the expected weight from the formula. |

So...the heaviest estimate was 42#, which, by TRUE fisherman's math would be 45# (at least!). In two years the story will told of catching 50# reds. My advice is to go with 50# now...why wait?
That reminds of the time about 25 years ago I was catching 180# yellowfin...until the seas got over 12ft. Had to come back to port at that point. See how this works? |

The state record redfish is mounted at the coco marina. 61.5 lbs. It's only about 50 inches. It is all about how thick the fish is. And weigh it on a scale, don't estimate. That's amateur hour.

Man I caught a 29" trout that weighed 7.8 lbs. I feel cheated.

You were, must have been a skinny east side fish.
I heard Eric Rue has a 26" 8lb trout mounted, not sure if that's true or not. |

My fish that won the southwest star this year was 28.1/2 and weighed 6.4. All depends on if you catch her before or after she lays.

Next time measure the girth, that will get you a little closer. Here's a calcultor http://www.fishdreams.com/calculator.all_species.html 40" fish with a 25" girth puts you at 31 lbs 40" fish with a 27" girth puts you at 36.5 lbs |
