Default 40 Merc ? 4 Mountauk17

Ran to lease yesterday, hit some duck weed in the ditch. Pizzer still worked but motor seemed hot. Did not look like tatal tail had much water coming out of it. What would cause water to stop coming out and will it burn up the motor?

You should have a tattle tail on the engine chaps, above the exhaust ports. Unless the line coming off the block was capped off? If you have a air compressor blow all the water pick ups and ports with a air gun to break free of any debris. If that does not work it can be your water pump impeller or thermostats.

Location......take the engine cover off. While standing behind the engine, look up just above the top spark plug.

Unscrew each of the 4 screws part way until the "cover" is free from the engine. There is a spring pushing on the cover and it is best if the cover is loose from the engine before removing the screws.

After the cover is off......be carful when removing the thermostate, there is a gasket behind it.....try not to "tear" the gasket or you will need a new gasket.

After cleaning the thermostate.....I recommend [when your wife is not watching] putting the thermostate in a pot and add water until it is covered. Bring the water to a boil on the stove so the thermostate is "opened". There will probably be some "stuff" that will come free when it opens.

Now get a small screw driver, knife or similar tool and carfully clean out the engine where the thermostate goes.

Now you are ready to put it back in.

The picture is of a 40 hp Force outboard engine.

Thanks Gerald, I looked yesterday and thought that was the Thermostat but mine is located just to the left of the head. Don't worry about what wife she wants to go fishing/crabbing so anything is okay as long as boat runs.

I run my engine in a narrow, shallow bayou when I go Deer hunting.....so it get plugged up a couple of times every season and over heats the engine. It usually will unplug after I let it cool down and then run it some more. But it can take several "over-heating's" before it keeps the engine cool enough to not overheat again.

This is kind of a pain when I hunt until dark and trying to get back to the boat launch. I am afraid to take it apart on the water where there is nothing but flooded swamp and no way to get out on dry land to pull the thermostate to clean it.
