Not too shabby,I fished the lower basin and didn't even get a bite.Going to give it a try around the bay next weekend.Did you catch on live bait or artificial? I had a few buddys that caught some nice ones on live cocahoes....

we caught the reds and flounder on dead shrimp, and the rest on plastics and a few finger mullet we cast netted going through the island.

It seems like when it gets hot and not much tide movement out there, you almost need bait.....

How do you guys fish your bait shrimp for reds and flounder? Do you fish it on the bottom or under a cork??? New and trying to learn.

Reds and Flounder are mostly bottom feeders, so usually no cork is better.
In shallow water or if there are lots of oysters on the bottom.....using a cork may be better. |

If your fishin the reefs or along the bank I use a cork, any other time I don't use one. I like to use the clip on corks so I can switch from either way fast.

as for fishing the bottom, do you just let it sit there, or do you bump it off of the bottom back to the boat?

This depends............
on what type bottom or dropoff you are fishing. Are you fishing structure or by a point or cut where there is moving water. If it is a sandy or smooth botton.....I would slowly lift the bait every minute or so to move the bait. If the bottom is muddy or "rocky" to where your bait gets hung-up...don't move the bait. For a dropoff.......do the same until you learn where the fish are located. Then just try to put the bait where the fish are located. If you are fishing a structure.....do the same as for a dropoff. Point or where there is current.....keep throwing the bait to different spots and maybe slowly move the bait until you find where the fish are located. When fishing a current.....it is usually best to throw up current and let the bait "naturally" move with the water. Doing this is much harder to feel the bite because it is hard to keep the slack out of the line. |
