I was told the same thing, but seriously doubt its illegal. Just frowned upon by authorities. Besides, how many thieves have you seen carrying a slim jim????

If you decide to get a lock out kit, get the Big Easy with inflator bag made by Steck, thats what most wrecker drivers use.

FYI
Just FYI from someone who used to be in the business. As dink explained, there are currently NO vehicles in production that can be opened with a slim jim without causing damage to the vehicle. Most vehicles have vertical shielded linkages and some even have bicycle style cables which are shielded at the door latch and lock assembly. Unless you are a locksmith or in law enforcement, it could very well pose an issue should an investigation take place due to an incident. It is un-needed liability on your part for either damage to property civily or potential criminal investigation. Most professional kits are meant for binding linkages and manipulating vertically. A lot of vehicles require in the door techniques or what we called swan tools which would go under a window and inside the vehicle to manipulate a lock or switch. Back in the day, slim jims used to open any car and still today, SOME locksmiths with years of experience have the ability to still open vehicle with them, but the probability of damage is almost certain. Just my .02!

Most of them that I've seen use the wedges to pust the glass away from the molding/gasket then some how reach under the glass and push the power lock/unlock button.

Pook, you are opening yourself up to a tremendous amount of liability with your setup. There is a reason no law enforcement agencies are allowed to unlock cars anymore and breaking the locking system is it. Quit trying to be MaGiver Pook, stick to the Randy Savage look a like contest and things will work out.

Before anyone goes diving off into the door of any vehicle you better know what your getting into. If a auto or truck has side air bags and you short out something BOOM you just set off the air bag. Also alot of the newer cars have windows that are under tension. if you don't do everything just right you shatter a window glass.
Not worth the averge Joe messing w/ it. |

i wasnt planning on going into business with it. I have it in case someone needs help. I know that you can not perform this maneuver on a vehicle 2004 or higher with the risk of deploying the side air bags in most vehicles.
The reason i got this is because a young lady was locked out of her car with it running the other day. No one was inside and there was no immediate danger, but she ended up calling a tow truck service and they charged her $95. |
