Help me out on this guys and gals

Went fishing today on a private pond I was fishing with a jig black/chart black up top and chart tail all they would do is bite the tail off I know this because pull a big one up to the boat and went for the net and it spit two tails out at me. What can I do to get them to bite the hook next time and I also switched to a solid chart bait and they would not hit it but would hit the black/chart what can I do next time it happens.

Let em have it longer or see if they will hit a faster, reaction type bait where hook ups are better.

try a trailer hook like a spinner bait but it won't be weedless and try changing to a small shad like bait like a junebug grub on a 1/0 ewg hook with a dipped chartreuse tail, thats what I do in tournaments.
