Default Anchor Advice?

Just got a bigger boat this year, 22' Hanko. Had problems holding the boat on anchor last time at Caldwell reef in SW Pass, due to the strong current and bigger boat I kept drifting into po'd fellow anglers. Since I hadn't picked my final anchor yet, I was wondering what experience says is the best type or size anchor for areas like the reefs in the pass. Any advice appreciated.....

You could look into the "w" anchor if you are fishing shallow water. Anything over 4 feet deep though it will not hold

SOrry to hijack, that just came to me and i felt it needed to be shared.

15 lb anchor & 8 ft of heavy chain, it's gonna hold that anchor down so it can get into the mud, sand etc.

For a true hard reef anchor, the "grapple" anchor works best. Its got spikes that will grab reef / rocks & not destroy the bottom. Also the anchor spikes will bend a lil bit so u can retrieve the anchor if it get stuck or hubg.No chain needed just tie rope to anchor.
10-12 lb if u fishin a deeper reef like 10ft or more a chain may help.

Deep water and heavy current calls for long heavy chain, 6-8ft. at least! the chain is more important than the anchor itself. You can get away with 4-6 ft, but double the chain (two lengths of 4-6ft. side by side if all you have is a lighter chain! its the weight that keeps the anchor from pulling off the bottom. I use a danforth 20-26ft. series, and it does really good, but I also have 6 ft. of heavy chain. Its the biggest series that would fit in my anchor locker on my bayboat. good luck with it!

Thanks guys. I never thought of the chain, looks like I'll be getting one. I saw a plastic coated one at Academy, don't know how that coating holds up. I'll probably go with a grapple as PUREBAY2200 suggested. Thanks for the tips, may they save you all from future (unintended) encroachment violations.

I have used both the grappling anchors and this one. This one holds on a reef or in the sand.

Better plastic coated chain @ lowes and its cheaper than acadamy.I use a danforth anchor w/ 6' chain fish caldwell w/ no problems...

If u have a small anchor box, the coated chain will b difficult to get in..... It don't bend alot.
Loose chain will take up less space and b easier to store.
I had a medium size box in my purebay, but with 2 anchors- always have a back up- i went with the loose chain.
Good luck!!
Glad we could all help!

Kajun Klaw---manufactured by Streamline industries, I mostly fish reefs south of Marsh Island, this is the only anchor that holds.

Anchor chain @ Lowes , each link is coated seperatly. It functions like regular chain, just don,t scratch your boat up.

Stay away from the plastic coated chain. Chain will eventually rust under plastic.

I bought the 5/16" inch galvanized X 8 ft. I have a carpet remnant in my anchor locker to deaden the noise on the aluminum hull and prevent wear/tear. Here's a pic of it. Oh, and some fish from yesterday at T' Butte. Thx to JR, who came to show me how to catch some specs, and thanks for the advice. This is a great board.
