A buddy of mine shot this in Forked Island this morning....What do ya'll think it is....looks like a cross between a GW teal and ?????

Half gray duck for sure.....it looks like a teal cross..... Never seen a big duck teal cross.. Mostly you have mallards with pintail ,wigon,grays or spoons

A Mutt duck ! Looks like a wigeon gray! Looks funny wit that Lil head!

It is a hyrid of Mallard / Gadwall ,which is known as a Brewers Duck.
In form and proportions this bird is very nearly allied to the Mallard, from which it differs in having the bill considerably narrower, in wanting the recurved feathers of the tail, in having the feet dull yellow in place of orange-red, the speculum more green and duller, without the white bands of that bird, and in the large patch of light red on the side of the head. It may possibly be an accidental variety, or a hybrid between that bird and some other species, perhaps the Gadwall, to which also it bears a great resemblance.

We shot a blue winged teal crossed with a pintail this year. Had a blue wing breast, almost all white head, and pintail wings. It was pretty bad a s s.

Yep, think you guys are right...definitely looks like a brewers duck to me....After googling it, seems like it was first documented after one was shot in Lake Barataria in 1822, and the bird was named after an orinthologist.

Either way it is a awesome specimen! Congrats on a special kill! I would contact the willife boys and ask them about it. See if they are familiar with the bird and see if the bird is common.
