Default Motor Question / Diagnosis

I have an oily substance coming out of the hole on the foot of the motor. Is this just unused fuel/oil, carbon build-up, or something else? It isnt much but enough for me to question. It isnt milky but a dark oily substance. I didnt notice it until after I flushed the motor and saw it. Any suggestions or anything to be worried about?

That's a drain. You just have a leaking seal in your lower unit. Check the oil.

Lower unit oil.
Could b a seal or o-ring issue.

jp..... look again at where this leaking oil is coming from.

Is there a screw in this hole? I think what you are looking at is the lower unit oil drain plug. It could be that this screw is loose and just needs tighting. It takes a very big flat head screwdriver to tighten this screw. I made a tool to tighten this screw using a piece of 1/8" thick flat bar and grown it down to fit tightly in the slot on the screw.

If this is what you have that should stop your leak. Now if the oil still leaks, there is a thin flat "washer" like gasket on the back side of the screw head. The gasket could be bad, or maybe the gasket is missing.

Get this fixed. If you get water in the oil, it could really cause some damage to the lower unit gears.

There is no screw in this hole. On the other side of the foot there is a screw which i didnt mess with. How hard is it it change the seal and/or O ring in the foot? Is this something i could do or do i have to take it somewhere?

You do any kind of mechanical work before?

Its not hard to do but I can tell you from experience that drain screw is sometimes a Beootch to get out.

Dink, I had one of them and couldn't get mine out, Had make a screwdrive that fit snuggly in the slot, weld a bar on the end which my brother pushed on while I turned it with a big cresent wrench. It was a beeootch

If you ran the engine just a few minutes in the water with that screw missing you might have problems, looks like a merc lower unit, get a new drain screw and the little blue gasket that goes with it, refill lower unit with gear oil, run for a few minutes at the house going to forward and reverse while hooked up to water hose, drain gear oil, and refill again. There is upper screw that matches the lower screw hole, that is your vent hole. Make sure you have a blue gasket for for the vent hole screw also. Hopefully you not run the motor to long with the screw missing, causes serious damage to lower unit seals and gears. Good Luck

This hole doesnt have any threads in it at all.... it looks like a drain like what dink said.

Like Dink said, you have a leak in one of your seals. Probably the shaft input seal. If it is a fill screw or drain screw, it would leak on the other side of the lower unit. It is possible, the lower unit was over serviced and has too much oil in it. With the motor down, remove the upper screw and see if any oil flows out. If it continues to leak, you will have to drop the lower unit and remove the water pump to get to the seal. I just did mine on Saturday. Not too tough if you are mechanically inclined. I had problems removing the drive key for the impeller from the shaft. Had to drill and grind it out with a dremel, but it was rusted in pretty good. Good luck.

My old Yamaha was leaking like that so I pulled the foot and took it to the shop and just had them check the foot over real good and replace all seals and it didn't cost much and I knew it was all good when I put it back on.
