I have read a few times that you guys like to replace or remove the hooks that come on your topwater lures. What is this accomplishing? Does it really make a big difference? I know the action will be somewhat different. Do you mostly do it for the action or when you have one hooked? Please be specific with the lures you use also.

KVD swears by mustads... just sayin. I just started customizing my own baits, soo i havent gotten that far yet. I did however customize a crankbait that i used and fish were easier to hook.... couldnt tell really on losing them as i have not had too many lost on it anyways... knock on wood.

I will usually just fish with a new Topwater bait.......but Some of the baits are made with lower quality hooks. IMO some of the hooks are not very strong and could staighten out some with a big fish. I normally fish with a fairly light drag setting on my reel, so I don't feel the need to put on a stronger hook on a new bait. The other main reason I change out the hooks is due to rust. The hooks on most baits start to rust fairly fast..... so I change them out with a better quality hook. |
