Grand Isle Bridge Burned Down
Authorities said a spark from electric lines along the bridge may have sparked the fire, which burned for over six hours before being extinguished early Saturday. Firefighters said creosote, a chemical preservative used to treat the wooden ties, likely fueled the blaze. The state-owned bridge was virtually destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. The portion closest to Grand Isle was rebuilt and opened for fishing in July 2008. GRAND ISLE, La. – A popular fishing pier that has been knocked down and rebuilt following hurricanes was destroyed by fire Saturday night. Grand Isle Mayor David Camardelle said about 1,500 feet of the historic pier at Caminada Pass burned. Camardelle said they think an electrical problem may be to blame. Because the source of the fire was under the old wooden structure, firefighters battled the blaze most of the night from boats. |

You could always catch all the white trout you wanted at night from that bridge. What a shame.

With all the trouble of the past few fishing seasons with the poeple using it, I will be surprised if it is rebuilt. Especially since the state is in such a finacial crisis right now. I know a few people that went this past summer, and said they would never return due to the profanity and fights on the bridge, mostly by young punks.
I have alot of memories from that old bridge! |
