Default Hauling a Yak

I have a Ford F150 with the stub bed and I will be buying a 14' yak this weekend so I am wondering what's legal hanging out of truck with a flag and how do the rest of ya'll deal with this situation.

not sure on the legal stuff but we have always built a trailer hitch attachment that extends out with a flat bar across the top to give back end some support. kinda like this

I have seen those but I was more worried about law wise the length, I don't worry much about of being supported and I will tie it down good

Length don't matter, just flag it good.

I have a 14' and this is what I use. Got it for Christmas and was ordered from Cabela's. If you're worried about the yak sticking out, it reverses to be used as a top mount support, also. I just use it in the bed, though. It comes with a flag, but never use it. If they can't see a 14' bright orange kayak hangin' out the back, oh well...

You are not suppose to extend 3' past the vehicle. However, a removable rack like pictured in this thread becomes an extension of the vehicle, so you have 3' from that. I know it sounds petty, but they will write tickets for not having a "red" flag on anything extending past the vehicle.

I was wanting to get an bed extender from hf. Just have to save my pennies. This yaking is getting expensive. :-) I see most guys leave the flag on there yaks. Hopefully we can make our first outing Saturday.

I havent had any problems hauling my yak around.... I have hauled it interstate and rural. my yak exceeds the 3' limit. Red flag is secured always. guess its a police officers discretion whether or not they will issue a ticket. and yes the accessories for a yak add up.

True dat but, I believe LEO's give sportsmen a ton of slack in our state;speeding, license plates, ect. Only have one ticket in all my years driving while going hunting or fishing. Now, I have probably jinxed myself for the next ten years with my statement!

When in doubt, put a red flag on the end. I have a red handkerchief tied onto the end of mine.

I drive a Sierra shorty and haul 2 Outbacks to Gulf Shores all the time. I stack them on one another and put a bunch of pool noodles under and between them. I use good synch straps and a couple of red bandanas tied together. I think the hitch extender is a great idea, but not nesissary. And you have to store it.
