Default Sabine 7-1

Hit the lake with Uglyduckling after work yesterday and caught a few trout and reds on the outgoing tide. Uglyduckiling has a new nickname though......Dude is now the gar slayer! He musta caught 10 gar in the 3-4 1/2 ft range. Fun trip for sure. Gonna try to do it again today if we can escape the overtime dragnet. Oh yeah... Thanks to Dink for the real time regulation clarification. You da man.

Neither one of us had ever cleaned one, and I heard it can be quite a chore. Is there a preferred method of cleaning one? I know that their scales a very thick, and it seems like it would be hard to get through thier skin

Machete/Hatchet, pair of pliers and a filet knife. Grab top fin with pliers, use machete/hatchet to cut up the back under the fin to head. Use fillet knife to seperate skin and meat. Not that had after you do a few of them

I hate to ask a stupid question, but are the "gar" that we catch in sabine lake the "good eating" kind?

Their good to eat. We always make gar balls out of them. We use to catch some big ones in Johnsons Bayou. As teenagers we would take them to Port Author and sell them for gas money. People would buy them up in a second. The biggest one I ever caught was around 45 lbs.

In the videos you see folks using a machete . That's old school. Use a sawz all instead.
