Default How to verify if gas contains ethanol

Hi,
I know a gas station is supposed to put a sticker on the pump if his tanks contain ethanol fuel but my trust level is pretty low. what I want to know is if a station does not have the ethanol sticker, on his pumps, is there any quick and easy way to tell if the gas contains ethanol? I have read where some people say they can smell the difference but did not specify the difference in smell.

I appreciate any replies.

I found this with a little search. Put one drop in a small sample and if it turns blue it has ethonal. cost: $ 18.25 delivered.

get a graduated cylinder add 1mm of water and 10 mm of gas and mix, let it sit for about 15 or 20 minutes, the ethanol will separate from the gas and join with the water, when it seperates you should have 9mm of gas and 2mm of a water ethanol mix if it is 10% ethanol, if its more then the result will show, now if it is still 10mm gas and 1mm water then the gas has no ethanol in it.

you can also use something else other than a graduated cylinder but gas does escape and turn into a vapor so that is a thought to think about if you try to do it in ounces in larger uncovered container.

I do know if anyone has ever got gas at the corner of Beglis and Cypress St at the Conoco Station across from Tarver Ford you were buying ethanol gas that was being advertised as ethanol free. It is now under management by Pumpelly because the old owner got caught doing this and they pulled his license and gave him a very large fine for selling as ethanol free. I do also know every month the state checks to see if the pumps r pumping a true gallon and to see if they or ethanol are ethanol free. That is the way he got caught they put the stickers on his pumps and he took them off and put his sign back up and the person that checks that area seen it and made a surprise visit.

Default prices

No ethanol gas cost more. For example corners of McNeese & Lake st. One has it and the other don't. Notice the prices, and see none ethanol cost more.

Default Whats a guy to do????

Just got my boat out of the shop. Was running rough. My mechanic showed me some of the gas he pulled out of my tank. Had 10% ethanol. Last winter I sucked all of the gas out of my tank and replaced it with gas advertised as ethanol-free. All of my fill ups since have been from pumps labeled as non-ethanol. I know it is against the law to do this but as you can see it is not stopping some stations.

What is a guy to do?

Be aware!!!!!

I have been thinking of getting a test kit......for this very reason.

There was a report 6+ months ago of a station here in Lake Charles [I use to fill up there] that still had/has the "Ethonal Free" signs but sells gas with Ethonal.

Non ethanol gas cost more bc the Stations choose to sell it for more. The company I work for buys Almost 2000 gallons of Gasoline a week and we get prices from our distributors and it has all the prices for all the different octanes and the non or 10%< gasoline and they have been the opposite of what you see at the pumps except for a few weeks out of the last 6 months.

The worst thing about ethanol gas is if you have a small amount of water in the bottom of your tank it allows it to suspend in your fuel instead of settling to the bottom of your tank and it will do the same to the water in your fuel/water separator. and this is the cause of most engine trouble when ethanol gas is involved.
