Slid out to Sherbune this morning to see if I could find a gobbler to cooperate. Can't get them to cooperate in St Francisville or MS just yet. Found one talking and slid in on him. He only gobbled 6 times total. Never would respond to my call. Tried to slip in behind me but I caught him.
8" beard 1" spurs Registered him at game warden station was surprised it was only 4th turkey killed. Season closes tomorrow there. They usually kill at least 30-40. Awesome bird. I think its been tough everywhere. I don't know if they've killed that many there since the year of the flood back in 2011. That's quite a feat to get one in there now from what I've heard.
Congrats! |

I remember when I first started hunting out there, they had killed 78 birds that year. Was probably close to 10 years ago. And that's just 8 days with 4 of them being lottery only. Now it's just 2 day lottery and 3 days open to public.

That's a lot of birds. Wish it was still that way. Sherb is one of the closest public lands to me now. I'm going to Indian Bayou this weekend. Still trying to notch that first bird.

Came back for last day. Use a pirogue to get across slough. Get right on top of one and he's hot. Hits the ground and BOOM. Another hunter shot him. Thought for sure after crossing that bayou no one would be around me. But...that's public land hunting. Still was fun.

Pretty gobbler, Seth.
Tote 'em out head first and you don't screw up the fan. ![]() ![]() |

Crazy they only killed 6 birds and half of the birds killed were in the same area. |

Man I honestly thought the turkey was still in the tree when he shot. Very possible that he shot him out the tree but you never know. He shot once, right around 7am. I killed that one the day before at 7:30 and he hadn't been out tree long. The shot was no more than 150-200 yards from me right where gobbler was gobbling from. Had another one still gobbling across another slough but we had to double back to get there. By time we got there he was gone. I was trying to get one for my buddy. He's never killed one. He was crushed yesterday when that shot went off. We thought for sure we had him. |

Yes if you thought that bird was still in the tree when the shot went off good chance he was. It's too bad but that's the way it is sometimes on public land birds in La. Makes it that much sweeter when you get him.
We had to cross the bayou to get to the one we got yesterday. From Lance's scouting trips the bird had been roosted across the bayou but flying across to our side. Yesterday he flew down and started walking away. By the time he got the boat and I stayed on bayou to listen to him it sounded like he was headed back to the roost tree. We got in the woods and hit the call. We heard him gobble a ways off but closed the distance to 150 or so. He gobbled, we set up and he came in gobbling and strutting. |

That's awesome. I love it out there. Birds are so much more cooperative than those damn "hill" turkeys I got in St Francisville and MS. It's so hard to move on em. Wish it was open till Sunday. Headed to South Carolina Monday night with my buddy Lane to hunt with some friends he has out there. They say they have tons of them. |
