What a crock. Federal interests lie strictly with the commercial interests. Time to push for state management out to 25 fathoms. The 3 mile out state season does not help many people go catch snapper.

You're right.
Its just nice knowing that when its red snapper season as a novice fisherman like myself we will be able to catch at least 8 red snapper (4 people) for the ice chest.

Still haven't mastered being able to get the grouper from the rig legs and mangrove is always a hit and miss.

Maybe this will be a good opportunity to sharpen our skills at targeting other species.

Default Snapper.

This fight will get real ugly soon. As stated before just wait till certain states block the commercial sale of snapper. It will be a loose-loose for everyone. The poor ole' recreational guy and the charter captains will pay the price. My thoughts go out to the guys making a HONEST living chartering, the rest of us have other incomes.

the way I see it is if it comes to the point recreational fishermen and charter boats only get one or two weeks to fish red snapper then ALL commercial red snapper fishing should be shut down permanently until such a time as recreation season can be opened up for at least 8-10 weeks.

the fish stocks are either depleated or they aren't and how can commercials ever be considered as taking less then recreational fishermen ever can do.

mark my words, you shut down all commercial operations until recreational is open and suddenly overnight they will find all the science needed to say they no longer need limited fishing for them. right now the red snapper is treated like a privately owned resource bought and paid for by commercial interests and the politicians they own to ensure no one else can have any.

No one with CCA is denying any commercial snapper fisherman's right to fish there quota...

It's very big business as the commercial permit holders are by far a small group.. Similar to Deadliest Catch..

CCA is supporting Alternative 5 of Amendment 28. It would be nice if we could get a federal season that was a 3 day weekend. Like our state did last yr.. The Guide would start hollowing if that was granted..

This is my belief as a longtime offshore fisherman. The Data used to assess RS stocks are antiquated. It's based on science from 30 yrs ago..

If "New Science" was used, such as including every offshore platform in the GoM.. Then the Data would reflect RS stock could very easily support large creel and season limits..

Again, I see it as a slap in me face as a Rec fisherman, when the Obama administration mandated that because of the BP spill, all Idle Iron has to be removed or oil company's will be fined.

I work for several very large oil and gas companies in the GoM.. Does that Make me guilty by association for the oil spill?? Does that make me guilty, that rigs are removed by the use of Dynamite, Killing every single marine organism with n that platform..

10's of 1000's of pounds are then killed.. But does the Gulf Council do anything about those dead fish..

NOOOOOOOO.. Because they are being told what to do by the National Marine Fisheries.

But my voting out the politicians’ that are against the recreational fisherman then We can have a voice...

Again this my own opinions.. I can show U you-tube videos of our dive trips to spearfish snaps out of the Vermilion Blks.. The Video's don't lie.. But then again I guess U could photo shop 100's of snaps swimming around us during spearfishing..

There are schools 100's and 100's of snaps on most every leg of a single platform in 50-60' of water in the GoM..

Just look up ANY Spearfishing video's filmed in the GoM. U can see for UR self..

I'm on my 15th year working in the Gulf of Mexico and I know 1st hand there is zero shortage of red snapper, you can catch red snapper gulf wide all day every day on just about every platform in the gulf in the right snapper water depth

I have worked from High Inland to Grand Isle and anyone who works offshore and verify. This

I bet in 5 years snapper will be illegal to catch altogether in the GOM, probably start with a one year ban, then extend it etc... total BS!!! If they were really interested in protecting snapper that wouldn't blow up the old oil rigs. Have you guys seen the videos of all the dead fish after they blow one of those things up?

http://www.atmoreadvance.com/2014/04...l-fishery-law/

Thursday, U.S. Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-Ala.) announced that he has introduced his first standalone bill as a congressman, the “Supporting New Avenues to Protect Our Fishermen’s Resources (SNAPR) Act.”
This bill would repeal Section 407(d) of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, which mandates inflexible quotas on recreational and commercial fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico. These quotas are overseen by the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council.
On March 27, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia found that the federal government failed to properly regulate the established quotas under Section 407(d) of the Magnuson-Stevens Act, allowing recreational fishermen to exceed their limits. Based on this decision, on Tuesday night the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council Reef Fish Committee held an emergency meeting and voted to shorten the 2014 Red Snapper season from the original 40 days to 11 days.
“Our regulatory framework for fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico is unquestionably broken,” Byrne said. “The District Court ruling last month is a clear signal that we need to make significant reforms to this system right away.
“An 11-day red Snapper season would be a devastating blow to the coastal communities that are dependent on this industry. Today, I am taking action to provide emergency relief for our Gulf fishermen. I am confident that by repealing the quota requirements in the Magnuson-Stevens law upon which the court based its decision, we will give the Gulf Council sufficient flexibility to reverse their decision limiting the red snapper season to 11 days.
“I look forward to working with Chairman Doc Hastings and my colleagues on the House Natural Resources Committee to alleviate this burdensome restriction without delay.”

Each state needs to take control back by local enforcement. State agencies and public groups need to take back the power taken by Feds.
State officials need to conduct fish surveys and use data as reson for disalusion of fed power.
