Default Mayhaw time

picked up about 4 gallons of berries yesterday at a friends house. Starting to boil down now and make the jelly tomorrow. This picture is before the washing to remove grass and dirt. I am going to have breakfast tomorrow night with fresh mahaw jelly.

Mayhaw makes some fine jelly. There was a 22 acre mayhaw orchard just down the road from me. The older couple that owned it sold it and moved. The guy that bought the house and property bulldozed every tree into a pile and burned them. It was heart breaking to see that.

I agree he should be shot for bulldozing the orchard down. My friend has 7 trees in a row with underground watering to keep moisture in area of tree roots. We put down shade fabric on ground to catch the berries as they fall. Now with the fabric on the ground you just get the blower and put the berries in a pile. I used a small baitwell net last year and you can pick up 5 gallons in 10 minutes. This setup will spoil ya....had 3 1/2 gallons of juice finally finished at 1:40 am this morning. Headed to store for a few bags of sugar.
These trees didn't do much the first 3 or 4 years....but now at about 8 years old they are producing good.

Sounds like a pretty cool setup. I want to get some more trees one day, might have to keep that setup in mind.

Used to have some wild mayhaw trees on a hunting lease we used to have in Angie, LA. We'd pick some and the lease owner would make some fantastic jelly and give to us. He'd even fix us breakfast(with biscuits and mayhaw jelly)sometimes after deer hunting. He passed away this past December.
If I owned land I'd definitely have mayhaw trees growing on it.
