.....My crew decided to give the bull reds a break and wanted to chase trout on this day. Yes you know I had a little something to do with them making that decision. I fished with Dave Copenhaver and Mike Stradt along with my son Chris joining us again. Capt Josh picked up Jeff,Doug and Tim in his boat. After catching 26 trout (and losing another dozen or so for different reasons) the previous day the guys were starting to appreciate the yellowmouths! After all trout fishing in my opinion is much more exciting as the bull red fishing gets boring sometimes between strikes. We started off the morning chunking bunker swimbaits,VuDu shrimp and LSU chubs catching 8 fish at our first stop. Our second stop is where we whacked the trout the previous day but on this day there were no trout to be found. At our next stop we struck silver! Before I could drop the I Pilot it was fish on! Bunker swimbaits and Chicken On A Chain Bayou Chubs along with LSU had the trout in a frenzy. After 20 quick fish hit the box I noticed explosions on the surface within the hundreds of finger mullets that were present. I tossed out a 'super spook' and caught 4 nice trout in my first 5 casts. I quickly rigged up my crew with 5 inch 'Kick-A-Mullets' and the fun began. These lures will sink very slowly once they hit the surface and are great for fishing topwater or catching fish that are suspended 2-3 ft below the surface. The trout ate them up and to my surprise the redfish went crazy over them. We easily hooked up with 80-100 fish that morning and there's just no telling how many fish hit these lures and still did not get hooked. Truly amazing with all the sharp treble hooks how these fish elude getting hauled in to the boat. My son Chris really got a workout netting redfish from 6-10 lbs along with nice 15-18in. trout during the 90 minute slam. Bunker colored swim baits continued to catch trout along with the LSU chub but fishing with the Kick A Mullets provided much more entertainment watching those big reds and trout try to eat up the lures. It was a great day to be on the water in south Louisiana as the crew filled the big K2 with 18 reds and nearly 50 trout. The crew could hardly wait for Day 3 to do it all over again. Good luck fishing.
