On your day off you like to go fishing. So do I. People think we are lucky because we fish every day. That is so far from the truth. We take people fishing every day. Our customers are expecting a great trip no matter the conditions. We get some people that have no idea what a fishing trip consists of. We have to show some how to use a fishing rod etc.
Yesterday I had off and asked one of my neighbors to take a quick run out for red snapper. I have not gotten any yet this year. We made the run out with my bay boat just outside of the pass and tied up.
Our first drop and he gets robbed. this was the first 3 drops. He is not used to the circle hooks. We get one to the boat and although a keeper I want to throw it back. It is about a 4 pounder. He does not want me to put back a good keeper so I put it in the live well. He misses another one and then his second is a bit bigger and he wants to keep it. This turned out to be the smallest of our keepers. I land a 8-9 pounder and he realizes there are bigger ones to be had. I take the one out of the live well and release it. We had some get into the rig and break off. Not that the fish are thick there but it took less than 30 seconds from the time you got down till you either had a fish or lost your bait. I only had 7/0 circle hooks and he wanted to set the hooks so both factors were not in our favor. I also only had 50 pound leader and some of the bigger fish tore the hooks out of their mouths or just broke off half way up.
We put a few back but did not want to spent a lot of time out there. I did not even try for mangroves or anything else. Just a quick easy morning hit and run with a friend. Our biggest was 13 pounds. We also had an 8, a 9, and a 6.
Still had to wash the boat on my day off. Worth it!
Life is Good!
Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It's more important than that.
