I saw that they extended the state waters to 9 miles out. I don't know if that would help when going south of the bay area though.

9.5 miles south of PI or the Rock, U are in 40-45' of water.. Way deep enough for snaps up to 15-18#. Mangroves also.

We limited. Found them holding over a can hole. about 15-18" deep, about 100' from platform. in 42' of water.

We needed to catch a few spanish for bait. Couldn't catch any live bait castnetting at new weir at rollover.

Didn't catch a fish near platform.. No current at all when we got there.. We played around trying to catch some spanish. After about 2 hrs. current started to pick up.. We were breaking off fish using 60# floro leader. We had to go to 80# leaders to hold them.

We make a drift over can hold and my fishfinder would light up like a Xmas tree.

Am I the only one that doesn't know what a "can hole" is

A can hole is an oilfield drilling rig term.. Its the hole that is made when a jack up drilling rig or jackup boat, jacks up near or over a platform. "Can" is a large pad on the bottom of their legs.

As the jackup jacks up out of the water when they are going to work on or over a platform. The very large footprint pads (think 25' X25' or larger barge) and legs are shoved into the mud bottom. Making a hole or depression.

CG requirements mandate they jack up the bottom of the hull clear the water by 5'... Then they pre-load all the hull tanks voids with sea water. Loading the jack up to its heaviest weight.

As the jack up cans/legs start sinking into the mud (seafloor) they will keep jacking up the legs to keep the jackup level.

After legs stop sinking, and the jackup stays level for so many hrs. All the water is pumped out of the hull tanks.

Then they jack up to working height. Depending on the soil on the seafloor and weight of the jackup. U can have a hole up to 50' deep. Then the jackup finishes and jack down they jet pump the bottom of the cans to help break the suction of the mud so the jackup can pull the cans out of the hole. Normally they leave 3 or 4 holes.

I've been on drilling rigs that it took several days to jet pump and pulling the legs free.

Anyway that's a primer on what a "can" hole is.. It's the hole left by the the drilling rig legs.

Like any hole, small bait will stage in there, and the the big fish show up...Big snaps loves, loves, can holes.
