A Bywater resident shot and killed an apparent burglar who activated a motion sensor in the resident's garage early Saturday, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
No charges have been filed against the unidentified shooter, though an investigation involving the District Attorney's Office is ongoing, Officer Janssen Valencia said in a news release. The name of the alleged robber also has not been released.
Authorities say the resident of a home in the
600 block of Independence Street got a call from his or her home-security company around midnight Saturday that a motion sensor indicated activity in a garage behind the house. One of the home's residents went to check out the scene, encountered the burglary suspect and shot him, Valencia said.
Fifth District officers responding to the burglary call found the suspect suffering from several bullet wounds to his body. Emergency medical technicians pronounced the man dead at the scene.
Homicide Detective Rob Long is in charge of the investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crimestoppers at 504.822.1111 or toll-free at 877.903.7867. Callers to Crimestoppers do not have to give their names or testify and can earn as much as $2,
