If you’re looking to land the largest speckled trout of your life this spring you need to throw a topwater lure. Some may argue that suspending baits catch more big fish, or that live croakers are the way to go, but no.
For most average anglers able to work topwaters in the side-to-side, zigzag method known as “walking the dog”, topwaters present a better chance at catching a big speckled trout because they don’t require any specialized skill or expert maneuvering. And they don't get hung on the bottom.
You achieve this action by sharply snapping your rod tip down toward the water in a pop-pop-pop cadence while simultaneously reeling in slack.
When should you fish topwaters?
- Try them the first hour or two of each morning
- Fish topwaters on calm days with clouds or fog
- When you spot baitfish activity on the surface
- Any time you spot giant schools of mullet right at the surface
