Rutherfords beach sand is a lot whiter and looser than Holly Beach/Johnson Bayou beaches.
If it looks loose, don't drive over it, unless you have a 4X4. Stay on the packed sand or on the roads. When you get to the beach at the end of the blacktop road, go left. Fish the trough that the waves dig. They caught finger mullet where the old Cypress Inn was. It was on the road ditch just before you get to the last curve on the black top road. Lots of finger mullet in the ditch. |

Instead of taking one of the roads to the right and heading towards Cameron, drive straight out and follow the beach to the East? I've never fished to the East, always went to the West.
Glad to hear there is bait in the ditches, makes life a lot easier. Thanks Ray |

There is a lot of beach to the East. Go till you get to the sand road, packed sand and turn left. They were just past the red and white tower. They saw bait moving. Only caught for an hour, then shut down.

Thats good to know. The ditches along Holly Beach have just been dug out. The were dry for a month or so. Its only been about a week or two that the water has been let back in. No bait there. You have to stop somewhere along the reserve on the way in to catch your bait. There is a small bait shop along the beach now, nothing live though. All frozen.

Why not just bring a cast net and catch your bait in the surf. We always caught bait in the surf.

Not plenty anyway. Saw some bait real early in one area. Then saw a little in a couple of spots. When I got the castnet out.....in 30 min. I only saw one school [~5 to 8] of finger mullet and they were too far out to catch. I did throw at another school.... and caught 2 shad that were maybe 3/4" long. Hard to see/catch bait with 1.5' to 2' waves and the wind blowing 10 to 12 mph most of the time out of the SW. Waves were often breaking over the top of the rocks. After 9 AM the tide was lower and fewer waves were coming over the top of the rocks. The tide dropped a foot or more before 9 AM and about noon the tide started coming in slowly in the ship channel. Ship channel water was 4 to 6" visability. Water conditions..... fairly good [~6" visability] along holly beach rocks early, but did have alot of sand/dirt in the water. Also there was a lot of Sea weed. When casting, 4 out of 5 times the bait would get hung up in sea weed before you reeled very far. Sea weed was not as bad if you got out closer to the rocks. |

If the wind would have lay'd some, the water would have cleared in no time. |

I go real early with a spotlight. Check the water clarity, look for bait, throw a topwater a few times, just check each beach out till I find what I'm looking for.......I jhavent been since last year, heard they closed most beach's to driving.....except for Florida I think??
