Garmins are user friendly, like someone above said the MapSource software is fairly easy to work with and it also has an interface that works with GoogleEarth so you get the most recent aerial photos. When you are messing with MapSource you can switch from the topo maps to 'view in google earth', it comes in handy

The more expensive units become way too technical and will likely do way much more than you will ever need them for (bells and whistles).

Still have a Garmin eTrex I have had for 10 years, it even has solunar tables on it
