A mud motor would be better, but seven grand for just the motor is a bit much. A 40 merc on a tunnel is a good compromise.

I had a 40 on a tunnel and it does not compare to my 27 longtail. Maybe out on shallow flats, that's about it.

The main downside to a mud motor in my opinion is the lack of speed. Even a short tail probably won't hit 30 with two people and gear unless its modified. Not good if you have a long run. Other than that I think they are awesome.

I have a 9.9 Yammy turning a 27p choper thats mounted on a 12" hydrolic jack plate pushing my 18x44 Borel loaded with 5 guys and all our hunting and fishing gear that will run in 1" or lesss and does 62 on gps

Agreed, for every person loaded into a surface drive I believe you loose 5 mph. They suck for long runs in various depths of water, slo bote to China.

At one point in time I really wanted one, but I don't see the point now. A good tunnel hull with a 40 mercury will go a lot of places and get there faster and you can probably get the complete rig for cheaper than a mud motor by itself.

its all about what you gonna use it for, I have a big boat now so if I was just gonna have another boat for marsh fishing and duck hunting I would not mind a mud motor

We run my 18' tunnel/merc 40 into the marsh and transfer into a surface drive for a short run. It would take us 45 mins to make the trip in surface drive I make in 15 mins. Actually it would have been way cheaper to run a longtail on an 18' vs S/D.

im not a big fan of mercs but the older 2 stroke mercs can go through alot, i hav a friend with a 25 yamaha 2srtoke that does basicly the same thing with his and it doesnt overheat at all.

Achieving higher speed with surface drives has a lot to do with the boat as well as the motor. It needs to have a flat smooth bottom with longitude ribs. Our gatortail rig runs 32 with 2 guys, a dog, and all our gear. The motor is modded though. Stock it ran about 27 with the same load. Between the lilies, grass, and mud where we hunt a typical water cooled outboard would make it halfway to our blinds!
