There is no replacement for displacement! If I had a choice of either of those motors, the Black motor would be mine without a second thought.

I have a M40C Tohats 40 hp, single carb model, Just completely rebuilt by Jerry's Marine in Gonzales,La. My question refers to getting more punch from it. From what i am reading all i need to do is Swap carb, reeds and exhaust and essentially i have a 50 hp? I am mechanically inclined just not very knowledgeable on this motor yet... thanks for ll y'alls help..... Oh and we cought some reds this past weekend in haymark fishing gulp under a popper off the marsh cuts. Cought between 9AM and 11AM each day

Not really, you have a M40C, that C designates it as a 2 cylinder outboard. Everyone else is talking about the M40D converting to a 50. The D designates that motor as a 3 cylinder.
Your M40C is a 29 cubic inch, 2 cylinder, single carb, Japanese commercial fishing motor. The M40D is a 3 cylinder, 3 carb, 42.5 cubic inch recreational use outboard. The first class I raced was Sport "C", the C designated the max cubic inch allowed was 30. The 2 cylinder Tohatsu dominated that class. The fastest I ever got mine to run was 60 mph. That is with a total, after race, weight of 650 pounds. Look up Sport C on youtube. D |

So a 1994 M40D can be turned into a 50 hp?
What kind of cost is involved in that? Is it worth it to do to a 19 year old motor. My coworker has one. |
