A 40 tohatsu is 45 cubic inches and shares a block with the 50 tohatsu, so the biggest carburetors that can be put on are from a 50. Put the 50 carbs, intake and exhaust and you have a 40 making 50 hp. Got to do port work to get higher. A 59 cubic inch 40 mercury shares a block with a 50 and 60 mercury. Bolt on 60 carbs and intake and you have a 60 hp motor without touching the internals and it makes more torque than a 45 cubic inch motor.

Both are fine motors, but the mercury has more potential.
